Meroitic script

c. 3rd century BCE – 4th century CE

Kingdom of Kush (Sudan)

Kush's own writing system, in hieroglyphic and cursive forms adapted from Egyptian, used 23 signs. Griffith deciphered their sound values in 1909, but the Meroitic language remains largely untranslated.
